the third serious list of epic shares

Mood: Neutral
Listening to: Seeing Eye Dog – Helmet
Checking out: Sophie Ellis Bextor *

…since I might be adding some of these into my links, thought I’d share them first:-

1. Freecycle

“The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,864 groups with 7,603,875 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns and thus keeping good stuff out of landfills.”

2. A shareable.net article on Open Source Hardware

“The phrase ‘democratizing the creative process’ has been raised more than once over the last decade. The idea of enabling information, knowledge and resources as free accessible commodities is gradually becoming one of the 21st century’s biggest movements. The first decade was characterized by global initiatives of amplifying information distribution and storage capabilities. Gradually digital tools are becoming more common, user friendly and free. All in all bottlenecks of distribution and production are beginning to dissolve. In this environment the hardware industry is about to enter its own disruptive era.”

“The information revolution released the bottlenecks of distribution. The second decade of the 21st century will be characterized by efforts to release the bottlenecks of production.”

3. A shareable.net article on Home-made product manufacturing and the RepRap project.

“We’ve come a long way since Herbert Hoover promised “a chicken in every pot.” Today we’re on the verge of a factory in every home thanks to the RepRap, an open hardware 3D printer that is designed to replicate itself. You can make a RepRap for yourself, then use it to make one for your neighbor.”

4. The hackerspaces wiki

(Yes, they’re all related. Yes, I’m a hack.)

Needless to say, there are a lot of exciting things around for an engineer to try.

* j/k, don’t worry.
